Quilt fund-raiser has a happy winner

Susan B (left) has a new quilt for winter as a result of holding the winning ticket in the Bayshore Neighbours fund-raiser featuring a handmade quilt fashioned by Mary M (right) and other volunteers.

"I was absolutely thrilled to win this wonderful quilt," Susan said. "Thank you so much to all who participated in making the quilt and selling the tickets--especially to Mary. I shall treasure this beautiful quilt always."\

Maryann B, Bayshore Neighbours treasurer, reported fund-raiser proceeds after expenses were $323--to be used in a manner-still-to-be-determined to benefit the residents of Bayshore Towers.

No 25-storey condo tower in San Francisco By Bay!

SR&R, the developer promoting the so-called San Francisco By Bay project (Yes, in Pickering, not San Francisco!), wants to build a 25-storey tower in addition to the 18- and 16-storey condos and townhouses already approved over the objections of many local residents.

Mayor Dave Ryan, Councillor Dougie Dickerson and others on council are surely going to put the interests of the neighbourhood first and prevent Bay Ridges from becoming a jungle of concrete and glass with traffic, safety, health and environmental problems—and still no grocery store.

Ross Pym, Pickering's principal planner, and his staff are surely going to recommend against such a monstrosity being erected in an already overcrowded corner of Bay Ridges.

Neighbours party hearty at BBQ

More than 100 residents and guests had a great time at the second annual mid-summer BBQ organized by Bayshore Neighbours Association. The excellent Too Drunk To Fish Band featuring Lorraine Davis provided live entertainment that got many people up and dancing.

Allison and Dave show how it's done.

Joe can't resist the country music . . .

. . . but enjoys it much more when Doris joins him.

Curtis and Mercedes slow the pace down.

Robert has all the right moves.

Allison, a friend, Norlene and Curtis make a foursome for fun.

Hazel and Jim take a spin on the dance floor.

Joe surprises his neighbours by sitting in on the drums with the band.

Jim gets ready to serve a burger to Paul while Norlene, Henny and Barb are ready to offer sides and fixings down the line.

Ken and Hazel grill burgers, sausages and hot dogs for the crowd.

Doris is ready with cole slaw and potato salad.

If there had been a prize for the best-dressed, James would have won, hands down.

Dorothy took home the riches in the 50/50 draw.

Former resident Willie who still helps us with poster creation is presented with flowers and wine by Jocelyne.

Maryann (centre) is congratulated by Jocelyne and Tyler for her role in organizing the BBQ.

Don introduces the BBQ organizing committee, from the left, Hazel, who served as chair, Jocelyne, Sue, Maryann, Ken, Tiny and Helen.

Special thanks go to Guardian Property Management, SPG Engineering, Class Act Dinner Theater, Ginger & Co. Beauty Salon, Price Chopper, Shoppers Drug Mart, Willie Robb and residents who donated more than their time.

Yee haw! It's BBQ time again at Bayshore Towers

All residents are invited to the second annual BBQ organized by the Bayshore Neighbours Association and sponsored by Guardian Property Management Services. The organizing committee is headed by Hazel Daubeny.

Tickets for the June 21 festivities may be purchased in the lobby on Friday evenings from Maryann Boyd who can be reached at 905.420.2446.

The featured attraction this year will be a live country band, Durham's own Too Drunk to Fish Band. The name is kind of silly but their take on country, rock and blues is mighty fine.

San Francisco By The Bay, not!

Bayshore Towers: The only condo in all of Pickering with a magnificent view of Frenchman's Bay and Lake Ontario.

If you're new to Pickering, don't believe the propaganda in the advertisements you may have seen about the development on Bayly at St. Martin's.

This definitely is not San Francisco. This is South Pickering, more specifically, Bay Ridges, a wonderful neighbourhood that has existed on the shores of Frenchman's Bay for many years.

The only building in Bay Ridges with a million-dollar view of the bay and Lake Ontario is Bayshore Towers.

We've been here 30 years, and we'll be here another 30 years and then some. Don't believe anyone who says Bayshore Towers will disappear so the folks in the new development can have a view. It ain't gonna happen!

We figure the folks in the so-called San Francisco By The Bay development facing north will have an excellent look at busy Bayly Street, the CN and GO railroad tracks and the always busy 401. We hope the traffic noise won't get them down. The folks facing south, well, most of them will have an excellent view of the backside of Bayshore Towers.

A good time was had by all at potluck

Close to 60 residents of Bayshore Towers and their guests enjoyed an evening of fun, food and friendship at Escape To The Tropics, the second annual mid-winter social hosted by Bayshore Neighbours Association.

Lots of folks wore something tropical, but best-dressed honours went to Sue for her extraordinary bra--complete with seahorses swimming in water. Click on the image for a better view.

It was an outstanding potluck dinner with a mouth-watering variety of dishes and desserts prepared by participating residents. Among the standouts were John's gourmet macaroni and cheese, Hennie's yummo meatballs in a tomato sauce, tender pulled pork with pineapple from Helen, a delicious lasagna made by the daughter-in-law of Hazel S, Ken's superb chili, tasty chicken with spinach by Jocelyne, excellent seafood Alfredo by Hazel D, cream-cheese crescent rolls by Maria and two trays of outstanding sweets made by Marcie who herself wasn't able to attend.
A Hawaiian dance demonstration was presented by seven-year-old Myla (above) to the wild applause of all present. Jim (below) regaled the crowd with his story-telling. Jokes were contributed by Ken and Jocelyne.
The potluck organizing committee was co-chaired by Helen and Mary. The worker bees, in alphabetical order, were Barb, Hazel D, Hennie, Jocelyne, Maryann, Norlene, Sue and Ken, and Tiny. A special thank you was extended to Willie, a former resident, who, among other contributions, donated the 50-foot long mural that offered a view of a tropical paradise.

The 50/50 draw sold by Barb raised $55 for the association and $55 for lucky Dave. A dozen door prizes were awarded to the fortunate.
Before she left us, Myla gave a Hawaiian dancing lesson to Briley and Charley.

Ken performed Master of Ceremonies with aplomb. Don volunteered his services as Designated Driver but had no takers.
